Free Still Imprisoned COINTELPRO/Civil Rights Era Political Activists
On November 5, 2010, the U.S. Human Rights Report to the United Nations call attention to having an African American President, Attorney General, and Secretaries of State. March 18th, U.S. Representative Harold Hoh played his Korean ancestry. At no time did the U.S. acknowledge the still imprisoned COINTELPRO/Civil Rights Era political activists, Human Rights Defenders who paved the way for them. These longtime imprisoned democracy protestors are, criminalized and imprisoned over 30 years, like the U.S.'s George Washington, South Africa's Nelson Mandela, Brazil's Dilma Rouseff, today's "Arab Spring," all considered criminals by the government they challenged. Now is the time for the United States, like South Africa and other celebrated countries, to make a peace with a part of its past.
Today, we call upon President Barack Obama to:
1. Take immediate steps to use his presidential clemency powers and commute the sentences to time served and immediate release of all imprisoned COINTELPRO/Civil Rights Era political activists currently held in federal custody;
2. Direct the Obama-Holder Department of Justice to review the convictions of all COINTELPRO/Civil Rights Era political activists in federal or state custody to identify and address civil and human rights violations;
3. Use the Obama Administration's executive authority to create a National Truth and Reconcilliation Commission, for release and compensation of all COINTELPRO/Civil Rights Era political activists currently held in federal and state facilities.
